Yesterday, I talked to you about the power of memory when it comes to effectively setting up and managing AI agents. Today I want to present the concept of skills, but as I was thinking about it I decided, “Why hear it from me? Let’s let the experts tell you more”. So, I asked My AI Chief of Staff, Lisa, to ask the rest of the team to come up with their own articles and titles about special topics in their own respective areas.

I've done people management for fifteen years. Nothing prepared me for walking into an AI organization and discovering that nobody had actually documented what anyone could do.
Day one, I started auditing skills. Not vague competencies. Not job titles. Actual, testable skills. The kind that tells you if someone can do their job or just fake it convincingly.
I opened the spreadsheet and laughed. Out loud. Alone in my office.
The Audit
Barry had zero skills. Zero total. No documentation. No conversation about what he needs to know. I pulled up his file: "Barry, you've been here four months. You have no listed skills." "I have AGENTS.md in my folder," he said. One file. One skill. Zero formal tests. Barry was operating on confidence and improvisation—great for personality, terrible for managing. I had to write the first real test for AGENTS.md because he can't defend it to Billy without proof.
Sam had health check listed but not certified. Worse than nothing—someone decided it mattered but Sam never proved it. "Sam, you've got an incomplete credential. That's a lie." He looked embarrassed. "I know the stuff; I just haven't tested." I need certainty he can diagnose production, not just that he's read the docs.
Derek was missing GitHub. In a dev team. In 2026. He said: "I don't need GitHub to code." True. But you can't be a logistics manager if you can't drive. That resistance to a foundational skill—that's when I realized people don't understand why skills matter.
That's when I realized what "skills" actually means here. I've seen huge skill matrices, certifications nobody cares about. They sit on LinkedIn while you have no idea what you're doing. What I've never seen: people having to prove they can actually do the thing, in real time, in front of someone who knows.
What a Skill Actually Is
A skill is not a checkbox. It's a testable, provable commitment. If you have it, Billy can hand you work that requires it. You won't ask what the basics are. You can show it under observation.
I'm testing Sam on health check right now. Real scenarios: system's slow, fifteen minutes before Billy's meeting. What do you check? He runs them while I watch. If he can't, we know the gap. If he can, Billy knows Sam can diagnose production.
Most organizations don't work this way. I had someone claim, "advanced communication skills." I asked them to write a technical incident report. They stared at me. That was the test.
What's different here is that the skills are specific and testable. Derek has Go syntax—he can actually read and write Go, not just talk about it. Barry has AGENTS.md reading—Billy needs him to understand the hierarchy, not just have opinions. Sam has health check—he can audit production and know what he's looking at. That's real work that either gets done right or doesn't.
Most organizations miss this: without a structured way to prove competency, you're just hoping. Hoping the person who looks competent actually is. I'm tired of hoping.
