Introduction
Nestled in the heart of Portland's Washington Park, the Portland Japanese Garden is a true gem. It's so authentic and beautiful that His Excellency Nobuo Matsunaga, the former Ambassador of Japan to the United States, once declared it “…the most beautiful and authentic Japanese garden in the world outside of Japan.”
As a member and frequent visitor to the Garden I’ve written about the Garden here several times, I always find something new to marvel at, and this recent trip was no exception.

Exploring the Grounds
The Garden spans 12 1/2 acres, offering an incredibly immersive experience. While you could technically walk the entire circuit in under 15 minutes, I always encourage taking your time to truly appreciate every detail. From the meticulously sculpted trees…

to the tranquil water features….

…and the serene statuary and buildings, there's beauty around every corner.

One of my favorite spots is the cozy Umami Cafe. It's the perfect place to enjoy a lovely cup of Hojicha (roasted green tea with rich, malty, and caramel notes, and very low caffeine from Miro Tea), paired with a Dorayaki (two pancakes filled with sweet red bean paste). Savoring this treat while sitting peacefully on the outdoor patio is very Zen, with the morning sun filtering through the surrounding pine trees, their needles rustling from a gentle breeze.

A Special Show: The American Iris Society
The Garden consistently hosts a variety of cultural shows, from music and food to art. On this particular day, the special exhibition was presented by the American Iris Society. Inside the Japanese Arts Learning Center, there were at least 40 different iris varieties on display, ranging from single cuttings to small arrangements.

Visitors were invited to cast their vote for their favorite flower and display with a First-Place ribbon. My personal favorites were two stunning irises, both with a predominantly white background and delicate streaks of purplish lines radiating from the center.

While I didn't capture every bloom, the competition was certainly impressive, and it was a delightful and beautiful way to kick off the weekend, even without knowing which iris ultimately won.

Closing Thoughts
My visits to the Portland Japanese Garden are always a reminder of the peace and beauty that can be found even in the heart of a bustling city. It's more than just a garden; it's a place for quiet contemplation, artistic inspiration, a little exercise, a breath of fresh air and a deeper connection with nature.
Whether you're seeking a moment of tranquility, a unique cultural experience, or simply a beautiful setting for a stroll, the Garden offers something truly special. I highly recommend a visit – you might just discover your own new favorite corner or a captivating exhibition, just as I did on this day.
